Massage Therapy can Reduce Anxiety
The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) has released a position statement on how massage therapy can assist in reducing the symptoms of anxiety.
According to the statement, research from the National Institute of Mental Health shows that 40 million adult Americans suffer from anxiety disorders. This anxiety lessens one’s quality of health, for certain. Research has indicated that massage can reduce anxiety:
- in patients with generalized anxiety disorder
- in teens and adolescents and children with illnesses
- in those with chronic pain
- for cancer patients
- associated with lower back pain
- in those with headaches
- in patients awaiting invasive cardiovascular procedures
- in stroke patients
- in the elderly
- in adults with hand pain
- in patients with fibromyalgia
- in patients with congestive heart failure
- in women in labor
- in patients in hospice care
Massage therapy can also:
– increase a sense of calm/reduce anxiety after surgery
– reduce anxiety pre-surgery
– increase neurotransmitters associated with lowering anxiety
– decrease hormones associated with increasing anxiety
